The story is not to be taken seriously, but it does provide context for the levels which the player would play. Soon enough, he gets roped into missions and eventually a campaign against MicroSol, and also has to deal with some ancient terrible space thing that evil corporations tend to stir up. Unfortunately, a turn of events involving the death of his parents at the hands of the evil corporation MicroSol had him going on the run. The player character is Trent Hawkins, who wants to be just a simple pilot doing safe jobs. However, instead of presenting a grim and gritty dystopian future, Tyrian 2000 features a deliberately ham-fisted story about evil corporations which exploit outrageous technology for supremacy. Tyrian 2000 is also one of the earliest sci-fi computer games to make use of the premise of corporations being real powers in the future. The game takes place in a sci-fi future where humanity has expanded to the stars. The result is a game which rewards quick thinking and skill on the part of the player, like competent shoot-‘em-ups should, but is more forgiving of the occasional failure to dodge projectiles. Tyrian 2000 is the culmination of attempts by some game designers to develop a shoot-‘em-up that is more accessible and has actual story-telling. Furthermore, their stories tend to be throw-away plots. This is mainly because of limitations which have been imposed on the player character, such as being destroyed from a single hit and losing all power-ups which have been collected afterwards, to name a few. Yet, despite this statement, it is not an easy genre to get into. The shoot-‘em-up genre has the seemingly simple gameplay of a vessel shooting the hell out of other things on a top-down screen.
